PBP Fridays: F is for Fedw

Fedw is the official divination system of Kemetic Orthodoxy, restricted to those who have undertaken the Shemsu oaths. The name “fedw” means “four” in Kemetic, as it uses four sticks for divination. (Note: While sticks are the most common fedw tools, anything two-sided can work, including coins. Some Kemetics have even made dice work.)

While I am oathbound about the mechanics of fedw, I wanted to share a brief overview of what it is and isn’t, and what it can and can’t do.

Fedw is not interpretive. It’s not similar to Tarot, where I can draw a combination of cards and interpret and/or intuit their individual and combined meanings. Fedw is much more direct, with very limited room for interpretation.

Fedw is primarily for yes/no questions, not for subtle or complex situations. In addition to that simplicity, there are certain topics and types of questions that are not suitable for fedw, including medical questions (ask a doctor, not an oracle!), legal questions (ask a lawyer, not an oracle!), and any question with the word “should.” (If a querent asks “should I…?”, the diviner will recommend the querent rethink and rephrase the question to be more specific and clear. “Is it in my best interests to…?” is an example of acceptable rephrasing.)

Fedw only asks questions of the diviner’s Parent deities. Since all Shemsu have undergone the Rite of Parent Divination, we all have one or two Parent deities, and we can only ask questions of Them. For myself, this means I can only query Nebt-het (Nephthys) or Hethert-Nut (Hathor-Nuit)—though, in certain instances, I can ask Them about another deity.

Fedw will not answer loaded questions. If the querent already knows the answer, or if the querent is trying to phrase the question in order to get a certain answer they want to hear, fedw will not work.

Fedw will not permit repeated questions. This is true of more than just fedw, in my experience, but it must be clearly stated that asking a fedw diviner the same question twice will not work. Asking a question of one diviner, then going to a different diviner with the same question, also will not work.

Fedw is not a party trick. While fedw will not answer serious medical or legal questions, it is still a system that is not to be used for frivolous questions or to “test” the accuracy or the divination (see loaded questions above).

Fedw is always free to everyone. Fedw is, at its heart, a community service, provided by diviners to let querents and Netjer communicate in a simple, pre-determined structure. Shemsu are not permitted to charge money for divining with fedw, though they may charge a fee for non-fedw divinations. Relatedly, anyone may ask for a fedw divination—one does not have to be Kemetic Orthodoxy, or even Kemetic, as far as I know.

To sum up, fedw is a non-interpretive divination system using four sticks to ask the diviner’s Parent(s) on behalf of the querent. It’s great for straightforward yes/no questions and will not work with complex or loaded questions.

My initial thoughts on the Year 20 oracle.

Nut -> Mehet-Weret (The Great Flood) -> Hethert-Nut. For me, this is my Mama’s year. =3

The year is about Balance, and Hope, both of which require attention, commitment, and patience. It calls us to remain constant, steady, sure, just as the sky goddess Who oversees and embraces us all.

Consistency has always been a huge weakness in me. But I have created, this past Ptah-year, a greater consistency in many areas in my life than ever before. Even if some of them fell by the wayside eventually, they still paved an easier path between synapses for my next efforts to flow down. I know that I can do more now than a year ago. And I know how to do it. I am growing. I will keep growing.

Balance. Hope. Patience. Consistency.

Patience and consistency in getting finances under control and growing them appropriately; likewise with thriving in the workplace and ensuring my needs are being met in pragmatic matters; likewise with tending my body with nutrients and movement.

Balance and consistency in doing the work of becoming a better person, in my ways, to my standards alone; likewise with spending more time with my gods.

Patience and hope in forging through self-therapy and working through SAD this winter and, for lack of a better term, trauma.

Balance and hope in maintaining my creativity and expanding my crafts as my heart desires.

There is so much more to explore here, but this will do for a start. :)

I’m toying with the idea of posting photos every month of my shrine, just to see how it changes. Right now, it’s had a definite expansion: I oil-painted two small shelves to give me more surface area, which means more of the things inside the altar itself get to be placed in open air.

Here’s the shrine in total; you can see my corkboard up on the wall where I keep my religious/otherwise sacred jewelry when I’m not wearing it, including Sekhmet’s pendant and Serqet’s amulet:

To the left, I’ve added a red-painted shelf for Sekhmet alone, as I have the most icons of Her and I feel they deserve a special place:

To the right, I added a teal-and-purple shelf. I wasn’t sure Who it’d be for while I was painting it, but I knew I wanted a place to showcase my non-Sekhmet, non-RPD gods icons, so here we have Twtw and Renenutet:

I did a second painting recently for Hethert-Nut, which She requested; She liked the first one, but She prefers the iconography of Mehet-Weret, a golden cow with deep blue stars. I added the dark indigo background as tribute to the royal purple color I associate with Her. (Also, as most of my paintings, this one is metallic, so it takes poor photos. Also also, I did not use a reference for the cow shape, which is why She looks slightly deer-like.)

And lastly, I acquired a gorgeous statue of and for Ma’ahes, made by the ever-fabulous Nicolas of Shadow of the Sphinx. (He also made my little Sekhmet votive and both Twtw’s and Renenutet’s statues.) People, if you ever need any Egyptian statuary, go to this artisan first – there is no one better in terms of courtesy, skill, affordability, and receptivity to custom work.

Today I do senut, which I intend to make a regular practice as a full-fledged, formal ritual on the first weekend of every month. In it, I will offer my gods the following, and then ask each of Them for a message concerning the month ahead, via my divination tools (cards or coins, whichever They each prefer).

hetep-di-nisut, an offering which the King gives:

To Sekhmet, I offer Her the red shelf, a sacred place of Her own.

To Nebt-het, I offer a black bone ankh and a stormy grey-violet amethyst.

To Hethert-Nut, I offer Her the second painting, may it please Her, as well as night-sky-with-stars beads I found today.

To Ma’ahes, I offer the lion statue.

To Serqet, I offer a banana-milk smoothie. (Don’t look at me, She requested it.)

To Ma’at, I offer a white bird made of shell.

To Set, in thanks for His oracle assistance, I offer peppered jerky and two slim jims, as promised.

And to my akhu, I offer a painting of us; may I always think of my ancestors fondly. (I will finish it before senut today and post a picture of it later.)
